What actually matters

Four things to ask about a pallet going near food

01Where did it come from?A pallet that carried drums of solvent has no business under a bakery case. Ask a partner supplier what kind of sites their used pallets come from.
02Is it dry?Damp wood supports mould growth, and stretch wrap holds the moisture in.
03Does it smell?Odour can transfer into packaging and product.
04Are there protruding fasteners?A nail standing proud punctures film, cases and sometimes primary packaging.

Wood or plastic

Wood is not sterile, and nobody should claim it is.

Wood is porous, so it is harder to clean than a plastic surface. What wood can be is clean, dry and odour-free, and a partner supplier can tell you what they know about where it has been.

Wash-down areas are where many operations look at plastic. What your site requires is a question for your food-safety or compliance lead.

What about cold storage?

Moisture matters even more there. Wood that goes into a freezer wet stays wet and frosts, so ask for dry stock and mention cold storage on the form.

What about pest control and ISPM-15?

ISPM-15 is about wood packaging crossing borders, so it is generally not a domestic matter. For export it applies, and a repair with untreated wood can invalidate it. See ISPM-15 explained.
