Retail logic
The pallet the customer sees.
In a club store or a supermarket promotional aisle, the pallet is not packaging — it is a fixture. A 36-inch square leaves enough aisle width for two carts to pass, holds a full display build without looking sparse, and can be dropped directly onto the sales floor without transferring product.
Because it is visible, appearance grading matters more here than anywhere else in the used pallet trade. We sort display stock separately: uniform colour, no heavy staining, no visible repairs on the top deck. It costs more than standard Grade A, and it is worth it if the alternative is a merchandiser rejecting the load.

Can it be racked?
Poorly. At 36 inches the stringer span is short, which helps, but the deck construction is usually light and the racked rating of about 1,500 lb is genuinely a limit. Floor stack it.
What is 'display grade'?
Our own sort: Grade A structure plus uniform appearance and no visible top-deck repairs. Ask for it explicitly; standard Grade A does not include the appearance sort.
How many fit on a trailer?
Around 32 on the floor of a 53-foot van, and considerably more stacked because the units are light. Practical loads run 400 to 480.

Display grade
The sort nobody supplies unless you ask
Standard Grade A is a structural sort: full members, sound stringers, correct footprint, dry wood. It says nothing about whether the deck is three shades of brown or carries a previous owner's stencil.
Display grade adds an appearance pass — uniform deck colour, no visible top-deck repairs, no paint marks or heavy staining, consistent board width for a clean edge line. It costs roughly a dollar a unit more than standard Grade A.
It is also much cheaper than the usual alternative, which is specifying new pallets because the recycled stock somebody was shown looked tired. Display-graded recycled costs about a third of new and looks the same from three feet, which is the distance a shopper is standing.

Occasionally, for a branded display programme where appearance is functional. For everything else, display-graded recycled does the job for a third of the cost.
