A slip sheet is a sheet of thick fibreboard or plastic with a lip, placed under a unit load instead of a pallet. A push-pull attachment on a forklift grips the lip and drags the load onto its tines.
It weighs about two pounds against forty-five, costs about a dollar against nine, adds nothing to the load height, and produces no empties to dispose of. On paper it is a devastating argument. In practice they are a niche product, and the reason is a good lesson in why supply chains are hard to change.
What they genuinely save
- Weight. Forty-three pounds a unit load. On a full trailer that is 14,000 lb of payload freed up, which on weight-limited lanes is enormous.
- Cube. Five and a half inches of height per load, which in a container can mean an extra tier.
- Cost. Around a dollar against nine, and no return logistics.
- Disposal. No empties accumulating behind a dock, no fire code conversation, no removal invoice.
- Contamination. No wood, so no ISPM-15 and no moisture or odour questions.
What they cost
Push-pull attachments. Every forklift that touches the load needs one, and they are expensive, heavy and slow to fit and remove. A site that handles both slip sheets and pallets needs either dedicated trucks or a lot of attachment swapping.
Every party in the chain. This is the killer. A pallet can be handled by any forklift anywhere in the world. A slip sheet can only be handled by equipment specifically fitted for it, which means the sender, every intermediate handler and the receiver all have to be equipped.
No racking. A slip-sheeted load cannot go into a rack. It has to be transferred to a pallet at some point, which means the pallet did not disappear, it just moved further down the chain.
Load stability. No rigid base, so the load itself has to hold together. Fine for cases and bags, difficult for anything that needs a flat surface.

Where they actually work
Closed loops where the same operator controls both ends. Beverage and canned goods moving between a plant and its own distribution centre is the classic case, and it works well.
Export container loading, where the weight and cube savings are large and the load is being destuffed by hand at the far end anyway.
High-volume single-product lines where the receiving operation can justify dedicating equipment.
What they do not work for is the general case: a shipper sending to a receiver they do not control, which is most freight.
The general lesson
Slip sheets lose to pallets for the same reason the 48×40 footprint is impossible to displace: the value of a standard comes from everyone else using it, not from the object being good.
A pallet is worse than a slip sheet on weight, cube, cost and disposal, and it wins comfortably because any forklift on earth can pick one up. That is a network effect, and network effects beat product features almost every time.
